The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 31 May 2024 were released at 9.30am today.
Key points
Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 31 May 2024 (week 22) was 286, 86 less than the previous week. It should be noted that the number of registrations can be impacted by office closures around public holidays.
- The number of expected deaths for week 22 was estimated at 272 using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 260 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 22 was estimated at 14 using the current method and 26 using the previous method.
- For the week ending 31 May 2024, the number of expected deaths was estimated at 138 for males and 134 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at 1 for males and 13 for females, using the current method.
- Five deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 22 of 2024, representing 1.7 % of all deaths registered that week.
- For 2024, by 31 May, 50.7 % of deaths were males and 49.3 % were females. Almost two-thirds (64.5 %) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 31 May, there have been 8,174 deaths registered. 3,671 (44.9 %) of these took place in hospital, 1,391 (17.0%) in care homes and 3,112 (38.1 %) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 31 May (including those registered up to and including 5 June 2024) was 227.
