Weekly deaths tables – week ending 29 March 2024

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 29 March 2024 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

 

Date of registration

  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 29 March 2024 (week 13) was 399, 24 more than the previous week.
  • The number of expected deaths for week 13 was estimated at 343 using the new methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 305 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 13 was estimated at 56 using the new method and 94 using the previous method.
  • Four deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 13 of 2024, representing 1.0 percent of all deaths registered that week.
  • For 2024, by 29 March, 50.1% of deaths were males and 49.9% were females.  Approximately two-thirds (66.2%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 29 March, there have been 5,055 deaths registered. 2,317 (45.8%) of these took place in hospital, 891 (17.6%) in care homes and 1,847 (36.5%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 29 March (including those registered up to and including 03 April 2024) was 224.
