Please note the data shows weekly totals up to and including week ending 29 December 2023

Key points

Date of registration

  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the weeks ending 22 December and 29 December 2023 (weeks 51 and 52) was 393 and 194 respectively. The number of deaths registered in week 52, however, was impacted by the Christmas registration office holidays and may not reflect the number of deaths that occurred that week. Therefore, users should treat week 52 data with caution when making comparisons.
  • Eight deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 52 of 2023, a decrease of 9 from the 17 that were registered in the previous week (week 51).
  • For 2023, by 29 December, 49.7% of deaths were males and 50.3% were females.  Approximately two-thirds (66.7%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • From week 1 of 2023 to week ending 29 December, there have been 17,267 deaths registered. 8,094 (46.9%) of these took place in hospital, 3,015 (17.5%) in care homes and 6,158 (35.7%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

Date of death

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the weeks ending 22 December and 29 December 2023 (including those registered up to and including 3 January 2024) was 242 and 212 respectively.
  • At time of reporting, 17 Covid-19 related deaths had occurred in the week ending 22 December and six had occurred in the week ending 29 December, bringing the total number of deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate having occurred from week 1 of 2023 to 29 December (including those registered up to and including 3 January 2024), to 483.

Please note when comparing weeks, and years, that death registrations for week 52 can fluctuate due to registration office closures over the Christmas period.

The tables are available from the weekly deaths webpage.

From week one of 2024, which will be released on Friday 12 January 2024, NISRA Vital Statistics Unit will no longer publish weekly provisional data on Covid-related deaths.  Information on deaths caused by Covid-19 will be available in the Registrar General Quarterly Tables.
