The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 25 August 2023 were released at 9.30am today.
Key points
Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 25 August 2023 (week 34) was 325, 23 more than the previous week and also 47 more than the 2018-2022 5-year average (278).
- Thirteen deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 34 of 2023, nine more than the previous week. These represented 4.0% of all deaths registered in that week.
- For 2023, by 25 August, 49.8% of deaths were males and 50.2% were females. Approximately two-thirds (67.2%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- From week 1 of 2023 to week ending 25 August 2023, there have been 11,311 deaths. 5,386 (47.6%) took place in hospital, 1,934 (17.1%) in care homes and 3,991 (35.3%) at residential addresses, hospices or other locations.

- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 25 August (including those registered up to and including 30 August 2023) was 214.
- At time of reporting, nine Covid-19 related deaths had occurred in the week ending 25 August, bringing the total number of deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate having occurred from week 1 of 2023 to 25 August 2023 (including those registered up to and including 30 August 2023), to 308.
