The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 19 July 2024 were released at 9.30am today.

Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 19 July 2024 (week 29) was 309, 10 more than the previous week. It should be noted that the number of registrations can be impacted by office closures around public holidays.
- The number of expected deaths for week 29 was estimated at 337 using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 300 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 29 was estimated at -28 using the current method and 9 using the previous method.
- For the week ending 19 July 2024, the number of expected deaths was estimated at 168 for males and 168 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at -20 for males and -7 for females, using the current method.
- For 2024, by 19 July, 50.9 % of deaths were males and 49.1 % were females. Almost two-thirds (64.8 %) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 19 July, there have been 10,379 deaths registered. 4,728 (45.6 %) of these took place in hospital, 1,741 (16.8 %) in care homes and 3,910 (37.7 %) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 19 July (including those registered up to and including 24 July 2024) was 228.
