Weekly deaths tables – week ending 12 April 2024

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 12 April 2024 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

• The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 12 April 2024 (week 15) was 408, 126 more than the previous week.
• The number of expected deaths for week 15 was estimated at 325 using the new methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 321 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 15 was estimated at 83 using the new method and 87 using the previous method.
• One death mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate was registered in week 15 of 2024, representing 0.2 percent of all deaths registered that week.
• For 2024, by 12 April, 50.2% of deaths were males and 49.8% were females.  Almost two-thirds (65.9%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
• From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 12 April, there have been 5,745 deaths registered. 2,626 (45.7%) of these took place in hospital, 1,002 (17.4%) in care homes and 2,117 (36.8%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.

Date of death

• The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 12 April (including those registered up to and including 17 April 2024) was 252.
