The tables containing data on deaths registered for the week ending 7 June 2024 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points

Date of registration

  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 7 June 2024 (week 23) was 322, 36 more than the previous week. It should be noted that, due to a change in the server of the registration system which took place on the afternoon of Friday 7 June, there was a lower than usual number of registrations completed on that day which may impact the weekly total. It should also be noted that week 22 included a bank holiday with registration office closure, so comparisons with week 23 should be treated with caution.
  • The number of expected deaths for week 23 was estimated at 332 using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends, compared to 298 using the previous, 5-year average-based methodology. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 23 was estimated at -10 using the current method and 24 using the previous method.
  • For the week ending 7 June 2024, the number of expected deaths was estimated at 169 for males and 163 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at -4 for males and -6 for females, using the current method.
  • Eight deaths mentioning Covid-19 on the death certificate were registered in week 23 of 2024, representing 2.5 % of all deaths registered that week.
  • For 2024, by 7 June, 50.7 % of deaths were males and 49.3 % were females.  Almost two-thirds (64.5 %) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • From week 1 of 2024, to the week ending 7 June, there have been 8,496 deaths registered. 3,838 (45.2 %) of these took place in hospital, 1,446 (17.0%) in care homes and 3,212 (37.8%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
