Weekly deaths tables – up to week ending 2 May 2025

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 2 May 2025 were released at 9.30am today.
Key points
Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 2 May (week 18) was 404, 139 more than the previous week (265). Please note that the reference week may be affected by the registration office closures due to the Easter holidays in week 17, which could result in a higher number of deaths registered than usual.
- The number of expected deaths for week 18 was estimated at 329, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 18 was estimated at 75.
- For the week ending 2 May 2025, the provisional number of deaths was 222 for males and 182 for females.
- The number of expected deaths was estimated at 167 for males and 162 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at 55 for males and 20 for females, using the current method.
- For 2025, by 2 May, 50.6% of deaths were males and 49.4% were females. Over two-thirds (67.0%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- In 2025, by 2 May, there have been 6,611 deaths registered. 3,066 (46.4%) of these took place in hospital, 1,153 (17.4%) in care homes and 2,392 (36.2%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
- The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 18 2025 totalled 68, bringing the total for 2025 so far to 1310.
Date of death
- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 2 May (including those registered up to and including 7 May 2025) was 268.
