Provisional number of deaths occurring in week ending 15 August 2025 was 300

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 15 August 2025 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 15 August (week 33) was 300, 3 less than the previous week (303).
  • The number of expected deaths for week 33 was estimated at 348, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 32 was estimated at -48.
  • For the week ending 15 August 2025, the provisional number of deaths was 166 for males and 134 for females.
  • The number of expected deaths was estimated at 177 for males and 171 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at -11 for males and -37 for females, using the current method.
  • For 2025, by 15 August, 50.9% of deaths were males and 49.1% were females. Over two-thirds (66.4%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • In 2025, by 15 August, there have been 11,429 deaths registered. 5,348 (46.8%) of these took place in hospital, 1,959 (17.1%) in care homes and 4,122 (36.1%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
  • The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 33 2025 totalled 43, bringing the total for 2025 so far to 2,114.

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 15 August (including those registered up to and including 20 August 2025) was 265.
