Registrar General Quarterly Tables 2023 Quarter 3

Date published: 05 December 2023

Site topics: Births, deaths and marriages,  Deaths,  Death Statistics,  Registrar General Quarterly Report,  Registrar General Quarterly Tables

The Quarter 3 (July to September) 2023 Registrar General Quarterly Tables were published this morning at 9.30am.

Key points

  • The statistics show a provisional total of 3,969 deaths registered in quarter three of 2023. Of this total, 59 (1.5%) deaths had Covid-19 as the underlying cause. This compares with 1,188 (29.9%) deaths due to cancer, 335 (8.4%) deaths due to Ischaemic heart disease, and 414 (10.4%) deaths due to respiratory diseases (excluding Covid-19 deaths).
  • There were 38 deaths due to suicide (including events of undetermined intent) registered in quarter three of 2023. This figure cannot be interpreted as the number of suicides occurring during quarter three of 2023, however, due to the time delay in such deaths being investigated by the coroner and subsequently being registered.
  • A total of 2,894 marriages were registered in quarter three of 2023, and 12 civil partnerships.
  • The number of births registered in quarter three of 2023 was 5,190, which is continuing the slight downward trend observed before the pandemic.

Tables are available in Registrar General Quarterly Report.
