The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 5 September 2025 were released at 9.30am today.
Key points
Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 5 September (week 36) was 323, 36 more than the previous week (287). Please note this total the figure of 287 from the previous week may have been impacted by the registration office closure from the previous week.
- The number of expected deaths for week 36 was estimated at 333, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 36 was estimated at -10.
- For the week ending 5 September 2025, the provisional number of deaths was 175 for males and 148 for females.
- The number of expected deaths was estimated at 169 for males and 164 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at 6 for males and -16 for females, using the current method.
- For 2025, by 5 September, 50.9% of deaths were males and 49.1% were females. Over two-thirds (66.1%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- In 2025, by 5 September, there have been 12,371 deaths registered. 5,806 (46.9%) of these took place in hospital, 2,110 (17.1%) in care homes and 4,455 (36.0%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
- The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 36 2025 totalled 47, bringing the total for 2025 so far to 2,265.
