Drug-Related and Drug-Misuse Deaths 2011-2021

Date published: 24 November 2022

Statistics: Births, deaths and marriages,  Deaths,  Cause of Death,  Drug-Related Deaths

Number of drug-related and drug-misuse deaths in Northern Ireland 2011-2021.

Revision notice 14 December 2022: Drug-related deaths and drug-misuse deaths in 2021 have been revised to reflect the findings of the review of suicide statistics and additional quality assurance of archived data. Revisions to already published data are minimal.

Correction notice: 05.03.25: After the publication of Drug-Related and Drug Misuse Deaths 2012-2022 on 31 January 2024, NISRA identified a classification error in the published figures. This resulted in the omission of pregabalin and gabapentin from drug misuse figures for 2020 to 2022.  The impact of this correction is that the number of drug misuse deaths from 2020 to 2022 previously published has increased from 484 over the 3-year period to 494. The correct number of drug misuse deaths from 2020 to 2022 can be found in Drug-Related and Drug Misuse Deaths 2013-2023.
