Date published: 14 September 2023

Site topics: Young Persons’ Behaviour & Attitudes Survey

The Young Persons’ Behaviour and Attitudes Survey is a school-based study of the behaviour and attitudes of 11-16 year-olds in Northern Ireland.

Key Points

  • Just over 3 in 10 young people (31%) stated that they had a physical or mental health condition or illnesses, lasting or expected to last, for 12 months or more.
  • Although over three fifths of young people (63%) said that they should be eating 5 or more portions of fruit or vegetables each day to be healthy, only 16% reported that they usually did so.
  • Over three quarters of young people (76%) felt that there is always a food option in school which is healthy.
  • Just over one in five young people (22%) said they felt stressed a lot by the schoolwork that they have to do.
  • Three in ten young people (30%) were worried about being bullied and nearly one fifth (19%) reported being bullied in a way that frightened or upset them in the last 12 months.

The publication of the key findings is available on the - Young Persons' Behaviour and Attitudes Survey 2022 page.
