£466 million spent on roads during 2024/25

New official statistics released today by NISRA statisticians in the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) provide insights into Northern Ireland's road network and its condition.
Key findings
- Total road expenditure in Northern Ireland increased to £466 million in 2024-25, a rise of 1.8% compared to 2023-24 (£458 million)
- Structural maintenance accounted for 29.2% of total spending (£136 million), including over £107 million on capital expenditure
- New construction and improvement projects received £102 million (21.8% of total expenditure)
- 91,715 surface defects were instructed for repair following inspections on roads in Northern Ireland in 2024-25, a decrease of 11.6% compared to 2023-24
- 81,483 surface defects were repaired during 2024-25, a decrease of 13.0% compared to 2023-24. Due to varying times associated with surface defects being recorded, the numbers instructed and repaired in any given year are not directly comparable
- The total road network length in Northern Ireland was 25,970 kilometres at 1 April 2025, with unclassified roads accounting for the largest proportion (61.2%)
