Heart conditions and diabetes continue to affect thousands across Northern Ireland

New official statistics published today by NISRA statisticians in the Department of Health present the latest raw disease prevalence data from GP practices across Northern Ireland for the 2024/25 financial year.
Key findings:
- Hypertension remains the most prevalent condition with a rate of 145.2 per 1,000 patients, affecting nearly 300,000 people across Northern Ireland
- Diabetes Mellitus affects 117,711 patients (71.4 per 1,000 patients aged 17+)
- Chronic Kidney Disease affects 80,452 patients (49.6 per 1,000 patients aged 18+)
- Heart Failure affects 23,082 patients (11.2 per 1,000 patients)
- Heart Failure due to Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction shows a significant increase since 2017, rising from 2.9 to 5.0 per 1,000 patients
- Considerable regional variation exists, with disease prevalence rates varying significantly across Local Commissioning Group areas and GP Federation areas
