Growth in housing stock throughout Northern Ireland

New official statistics published 04/06/2025 by NISRA statisticians in Land and Property Services indicate growth in Northern Ireland's housing stock figures for 2025.
Between 2008 and 2025 the housing stock in Northern Ireland has increased. Figures in 2008 demonstrated that Northern Ireland had a housing stock of 728,341, this figure has steadily increased throughout the years and now in 2025 this figure has reached 841,827 which is a 15.5% increase over 17 years.
Housing stock is defined as a count of properties which are valued as domestic or mixed for the purposes of rating.
Housing stock is divided into a variety of house types. For example converted apartments, purpose built apartments, detached, semi-detached and terrace.
Key findings:
- As of April 2025, the total housing stock for Northern Ireland was 841,827.
- This housing stock was made up of 5 different house types as has been outlined above the figures of these house types are as follows, 15,454 converted apartments, 77,111 purpose built apartments, 302,009 detached houses, 217,468 semi-detached houses and 229,785 terraces.
- From April 2024 - April 2025 the total housing stock for Northern Ireland has increased by 5,839.
- The local government district with the highest housing stock was Belfast making up 162,357 of the overall total of 841,827.
- The local government district with the lowest housing stock was Fermanagh and Omagh making up 51,150 of the overall total of 841,827.
