237,447 tonnes of waste collected by Northern Ireland’s councils during January to March 2025

New official statistics published today by NISRA statisticians in the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs present provisional statistics on the key measurements of local authority collected municipal waste for councils and waste management groups in Northern Ireland.
Key findings:
- Northern Ireland’s councils collected 237,447 tonnes of waste during January to March 2025.
- During January to March 2025, 46.0 per cent of waste collected by councils was sent for recycling.
- The landfill rate for waste collected by councils was 8.3 per cent in January to March 2025.
- During January to March 2025, 44.3 per cent of waste arisings were sent for energy recovery.
- The recycling rate for household waste only was 46.4 per cent during January to March 2025.
