Annual Employee Jobs Surveys

Historically, there have been two annual employee jobs surveys; the Census of Employment (CoE) and the Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES), with each being run on alternate years.

From 2015, each annual employment survey will be named the Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES).

How do the Census of Employment (CoE) and the Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES) differ?

The two surveys ask exactly the same questions of businesses; the differences lie in their sample sizes and sample designs. Further disaggregation of data (e.g. results at a lower level of geography and industry) is available with the larger sample sizes.

What level of breakdown of employee jobs is available?

Breakdowns by gender, working pattern (full-time/part-time) and sector (public/private) are available for every annual employee jobs survey; however the level of detail available by geography and industry will vary depending on the sample size. The table above shows the approximate sample sizes for the most recent annual employee jobs surveys and the level of disaggregation available.
