Annual reports on registrations completed with the General Register Office in Northern Ireland

Please note: The completion of the Review of Suicide Statistics led to a revision of totals which applies to the years 2015 to 2020. The annual cause of death data available in the 2020 and 2021 Registrar General Reports reflect the initial findings which were published in May 2022, however they do not reflect the full findings that were published in November 2022. For most recent totals on deaths due to suicide for the years 2015 to 2020 please either use the latest reports on suicide statistics or refer to the latest editions of the Registrar General Reports from 2022 onwards (both of which also contain rates calculated using the rebased NI population estimates released at the end of summer 2023). Table 6.4 on detailed cause of death for the 2023 Registrar General report has also been extended to include a table 6.4b which gives time series information so users can obtain totals for an eleven-year period.

Correction Notice 5 May 2022 - correction to a formula in selected cells in table 3.17 for 2017 and 2018, corrections have been highlighted in the relevant tables. Changes are small so the impact is minimal but NISRA apologises for any inconvenience.

Correction Notice 16 June 2022 - The cause of death for ICD code Y20 was previously mislabelled as 'Drowning and submersion with undetermined intent', this has now been corrected to 'Hanging, strangulation and suffocation, undetermined intent'
