Disability and employment

Date published: 11 January 2023

Research and support: Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study (NILS),  NISRA-led Research

NISRA published a research report called "Getting into and staying in employment: limiting long-term illness" on 11 January 2023.

A quick-read version of the original research was published on 3 December 2024 and includes a 2021 update to the disability employment gap.

The main report looks at employment of those with limiting long-term illness or disabilities, as self-reported in the 2001 Census, to identify drivers and quantify their impact on the likelihood of obtaining employment or staying in employment by 2011. A second strand of this study assessed the difference in employment rate between those with and without long-term health problems or disabilities in 2011 (disability employment gap).
