Reduction in road traffic collisions and casualties throughout Northern Ireland

New accredited official statistics published 30/05/2025 by NISRA statisticians in the Police Service of Northern Ireland reveal a reduction in the amount of collisions and fatalities throughout Northern Ireland for 2024/25.

There were 6,150 road traffic collisions recorded in Northern Ireland in 2015/16. Now in 2024/25 road traffic collisions in Northern Ireland have decreased to 4,779. This represents an approximate decrease of 22% in the total number of collisions. 

There were 9,564 road traffic casualties recorded in Northern Ireland in 2015/16. Now in 2024/25 road traffic casualties have decreased to 7,571. This represents an approximate decrease of 19% in the total number of casualties. 

Key Findings:

  • There were 198 fewer collisions recorded in 2024/25 in comparison to 2023/2024.
  • Fermanagh & Omagh district had the highest number of road deaths with 14 fatalities, however Fermanagh & Omagh also recorded the lowest number of overall casualties within 2024/25.
  • Belfast City district recorded the most serious injuries in 2024/25 (144 seriously injured). Additionally Belfast City District also recorded the highest number of overall casualties with 1,671 in 2024/25.  
  • The largest principle causation factor in road traffic collisions for 2024/25 was inattention or attention diverted which was seen to cause a total of 789 collisions and 1,284 casualties.
  • The second largest principle causation factor in road traffic collisions for 2024/25 was driving too close which was seen to cause a total of 577 collisions and 962 casualties.
  • In 2024/25, there were 105 children (under 16) killed or seriously injured. This was 23 more than in 2023/24.
  • In 2024/25, there were 167 people in the 65 and over age group killed or seriously injured, which was similar to the number recorded in 2023/24 (166).
  • Nearly three quarters of all children injured this year 2024/25 were passengers (74.7%), nearly a third (32.4%) of children killed or seriously injured in 2024/25 were pedestrians
  • Passengers made up the largest class of all child casualties in 2024/25, followed by pedestrians (16.2%) and pedal cyclists (4.8%).
