Northern Ireland Census User Needs Consultation Open Now.
Introduction
The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) has launched a public consultation to help shape the content of the next census, due to take place in 2031.
The Northern Ireland Census User Needs Consultation is open from 28 October 2025 to 4 February 2026, and invites individuals, organisations, and community groups to share their views on what information the census should collect.
Why your views matter
Census data is used to plan public services, allocate funding, monitor equality, and support research. By taking part in the consultation, you can help ensure the census reflects the needs of Northern Ireland’s changing population.
NISRA is particularly interested in:
- how people used Census 2021 data
- what topics are important for Census 2031
- views on using alternative data sources to support the census
Benefits of participating
Taking part in the consultation allows you to:
- influence what topics are included in the census
- ensure data is collected that supports your community or organisation
- help improve efficiency and reduce the burden on respondents
- contribute to transparency and better decision-making across government
How to take part
You can respond:
- online via Citizen Space
- by email: census2031.consultations@nisra.gov.uk
- by post: Census Office, NISRA, Colby House, Stranmillis Court, Belfast, BT9 5RR
Supporting documents, including the consultation document, downloadable questionnaire (PDF/Word) and Frequently Asked Questions, are available on the NISRA website.
If you are responding on behalf of an organisation or group, NISRA encourages you to submit a coordinated response that reflects shared priorities.
