Over 2,000 race hate incidents recorded by police in 12 months

New official statistics published by NISRA statisticians in the Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI), provide statistics on incidents and crime with a hate motivation up to 30 September 2025.
Key findings
In the 12 months from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025
- There were 2,048 race incidents (270 more than the previous 12 months) and 1,280 race crimes (an increase of 112), representing the third-highest 12-month figures since data series began in 2004/05.
- Four of the five highest monthly levels of race incidents occurred between June and September 2025. The 347 race incidents recorded in June 2025 was the second-highest monthly level in the data series, just 2 below the 349 recorded in August 2024.
- There were 363 sexual orientation incidents (up from 359) but crimes fell from 221 to 215.
- Sectarian incidents decreased by 5 to 947, whilst crimes rose by 22 to 625. The crime level recorded remains the second-lowest in the data series.
- Disability incidents decreased by 1 to 77 whilst crimes increased from 42 to 45.
- Faith/religion incidents and crimes both fell (from 109 to 76 and 69 to 58 respectively).
- Transgender identity incidents and crimes both increased (from 61 to 68 and 7 to 13 respectively).
- Race crimes represented 1.4% of all police recorded crime. There were 11 race incidents and 7 race crimes per 10,000 population, compared with 9 race incidents and 6 race crimes per 10,000 population in the previous 12 months.
