Nearly 50,000 households on social housing waiting list

New accredited official statistics published today by NISRA statisticians in the Department for Communities present housing data for Northern Ireland covering the quarter ending 30 September 2025.
Key findings
During the quarter ending 30 September 2025:
- There were 49,588 applicants were on the Northern Ireland Housing Executive waiting list, with 38,336 households in 'housing stress' and 32,607 holding full duty applicant status.
- In total, 4,110 households presented as homeless to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE). The household types with the highest proportion of homeless presenters were single males (36.2%) and families (25.8%).
- The number of households accepted as full duty applicants was 2,462. The most common reason for presenting as homeless reported by full duty applicants was accommodation not reasonable (708 cases).
- There were 206 new social housing dwellings were completed and 40 new social housing dwelling starts were recorded through the Social Housing Development Programme
- During the quarter ending June 2025, 283 new National Housing Building Council (NHBC) registered dwellings were sold with an average price of £265,100.
- There were 364 homes improved through the Affordable Warmth Scheme, with provisional spend to date for 2025-26 reaching just over £4.3 million.
