54% of the population were registered with a Health Service dentist in 2024/25

NISRA statisticians in HSC Business Services Organisation (BSO) have released the annual report on General Dental Services for 2024/25. This publication provides a statistical overview of general dental activity in Northern Ireland between April 2024 and March 2025. It is based on payment claims submitted by primary care dentists to Family Practitioner Services (FPS).
Key findings
In 2024/25:
- There were 359 dental practices and 1,206 dentists. This equates to 63 dentists per 100,000 NI residents in March 2025.
- The number of registered patients is 20% lower than in 2024, meaning that 54% of the population were registered with a Health Service dentist (69% of children and 50% of adults).
- In the 18 to 44 age group, 55% of females were registered with a dentist but only 44% of males.
- Approximately 575,000 examinations were performed on adults; an increase of 6% compared to 2023/24.
- 212 per 1,000 registered children were treated for a filling, crown or extraction which is a 10% increase on 2023/24.
- The gross cost of dental services was £133.7 million.
