Output geography for Census 2011

Information on the statistical output geographies used in Census 2011, including digital boundaries for Small Areas and Super Output Areas.

Small Areas nest within the 890 Super Output Areas and the 582 former Electoral Wards in Northern Ireland.

There are 4,537 Small Areas in Northern Ireland.

Small Areas (Census 2011)

Small Areas (SAs) were introduced in Northern Ireland after the 2011 Census.

Super Output Areas (Census 2011)

Super Output Areas (SOAs) were developed by NISRA to improve the reporting of small-area statistics.
