ASHE Pensions Results

ASHE is a UK wide survey that provides a wide range of information on earnings, including workplace pension type by gender, age, and sector.

 

Latest results published 30 June 2026

The key points from the ASHE Pensions Results show that:

 

  • About three quarters (75.2%) of employees in Northern Ireland belonged to a workplace pension scheme in April 2025, an increase of 2.2 percentage points (pps) from the previous year.
  • Occupational Defined Benefit pension has historically been the most common form of workplace pension and continues to account for around a third of workplace pensions. Occupational Defined Contribution has increased sixfold since 2011, from 4% to 26%, making it the second most common workplace pension.
  • Employees in the 40-49 age group had the highest pension uptake at 84.2%, closely followed by those aged 50-59 (83.8%).
  • More than nine out of ten public sector employees (91%) and around two out of three (65%) private sector employees were members of a workplace pension scheme in 2025. This is an increase of 14pps for public sector employees and 43pps for private sector employees since the introduction of automatic enrolment in 2012.
