Ireland and Northern Ireland

A unique snapshot of life across Ireland and Northern Ireland from the 2011 Census.

What the report covers

The Ireland and Northern Ireland Census 2011 report presents a joint analysis of population data collected in both jurisdictions. It was jointly developed by NISRA and the Central Statistics Office, reflecting close cooperation and shared statistical standards.

The 2011 Censuses in Northern Ireland and Ireland took place just two weeks apart, on 27 March 2011 and 11 April 2011 respectively. This timing offers a detailed picture of the populations of both jurisdictions at a single point in time.

Key themes

  • population structure, including age, sex, marital status and households
  • identity and religion, including ethnicity, birthplace and language
  • labour market, including economic status, industry, occupation and commuting trends
