Alternative populations

Statistics are available for three alternative populations: Short-Term Resident Population, Daytime Population and Workplace Population.

Descriptions

  • Short-Term Resident Population Statistics provide population estimates for non-UK born short-term residents
  • Daytime Population Statistics provide estimates for an area’s population during a workday
  • Workplace Population Statistics provide population estimates for a given geography during standard working hours therefore taking account of the number of people who, for example, travel into a city to work

Short-Term Resident Population Statistics for Northern Ireland

Univariate outputs provide population estimates for non-UK born short-term residents. Most outputs are at the Northern Ireland level only.

A short-term resident is someone born outside of the UK who, on 27 March 2011, had stayed or intended to stay in the UK for a period of three months or more but less than 12 months.

Workplace Population Statistics for Northern Ireland

Univariate outputs provide population estimates for workplace population. Most outputs are available down to Super Output Area (SOA).

The workplace population of an area is defined as ‘All usual residents aged 16 to 74 who are in employment and whose workplace is in the area’. People who work mainly at or from home or do not have a fixed place of work are included in the area of their usual residence.

The following population groups are excluded from the workplace population of an area:

  • those not working the week before 27 March 2011
  • those living in Northern Ireland but working in England, Wales, Scotland, outside the UK, or on offshore installations
  • those with a place of work in Northern Ireland but who are not usually resident in Northern Ireland
  • short-term residents

Daytime Population Statistics for Northern Ireland

Release contents

Outputs are mainly univariate for daytime population. Most outputs are available down to Small Area (SA).

The daytime population of an area is defined as ‘All usual residents who are either in employment or full-time students in the area, or not in employment or full-time students but are usually resident in the area’. People who work or study mainly at or from home, or do not have a fixed place of work or study, are included in the area of their usual residence.

The following population groups are excluded from the daytime population of an area:

  • those living in Northern Ireland but working or studying in England, Wales, Scotland, outside the UK, or on offshore installations
  • those with a place of work or study in Northern Ireland but who are not usually resident in Northern Ireland
  • short-term residents

Workplace and Daytime Population (Distance Travelled)

Release contents

Outputs provide workplace and daytime population statistics on the topic of distance travelled to work.

Tables are available for Local Government District (LGD), with some available at Super Output Area (SOA).
