Decreasing trend in adults gambling in Northern Ireland

New official statistics published today by NISRA statisticians in the Department for Communities present results from the 2024 Northern Ireland Gambling Prevalence Survey.
Key findings
- In 2024, 57% of adults said they had gambled in the last 12 months, compared to 67% in 2016 and 80% in 2010.
- In 2024 47% of adults gambled in person in the previous 12 months, while 23% had gambled online.
- ‘Tickets for National Lottery draws’ was the most popular gambling type in 2024 with 35% of adults reporting that they had purchased tickets in the last 12 months.
- 88% of adults were considered to be a ‘non-problem gambler’ based on their Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) score in 2024, however, 3% were considered to be a ‘problem gambler’.
