Weekly registered deaths: 507 for week ending 9 January 2026

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 9 January 2026 were released at 9.30am today.

Please note that the total number of registrations in week 2 may have been impacted by the bank holiday office closure on 1 January 2026. Caution should be applied when comparing week 2 totals with previous weeks.

Key points 

Date of registration

  • The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 9 January (week 2) was 507, 182 more than the previous week (325).
  • The number of expected deaths for week 2 was estimated at 519, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 2 was estimated at -12.
  • For the week ending 9 January 2026, the provisional number of deaths was 250 for males and 257 for females.
  • The number of expected deaths was estimated at 263 for males and 256 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at -13 for males and 1 for females, using the current method.
  • For 2026, by 9 January, 51.2% of deaths were males and 48.8% were females. Over two-thirds (70.2%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
  • In 2026, by 9 January, there have been 832 deaths registered. 401 (48.2%) of these took place in hospital, 142 (17.1%) in care homes and 289 (34.7%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
  • The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 2 2026 totalled 112, bringing the total for 2026 so far to 184.

Date of death

  • The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 9 January (including those registered up to and including 14 January 2026) was 337.
