Weekly registered deaths: 413 for week ending 16 January 2026

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 16 January 2026 were released at 9.30am today.

Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 16 January (week 3) was 413, 94 less than the previous week (507).
- The number of expected deaths for week 3 was estimated at 406, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 3 was estimated at 7.
- For the week ending 16 January 2026, the provisional number of deaths was 214 for males and 199 for females.
- The number of expected deaths was estimated at 204 for males and 201 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at 10 for males and -2 for females, using the current method.
- For 2026, by 16 January, 51.4% of deaths were males and 48.6% were females. Over two-thirds (69.4%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- In 2026, by 16 January, there have been 1,245 deaths registered. 589 (47.3%) of these took place in hospital, 222 (17.8%) in care homes and 434 (34.9%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
- The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 3 2026 totalled 88, bringing the total for 2026 so far to 272.
