Weekly registered deaths: 347 for week ending 30 January 2026

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 30 January 2026 were released at 9.30am today.

Date of registration
- The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 30 January (week 5) was 347, 80 less than the previous week (427).
- The number of expected deaths for week 5 was estimated at 394, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 5 was estimated at -47.
- For the week ending 30 January 2026, the provisional number of deaths was 160 for males and 187 for females.
- The number of expected deaths was estimated at 197 for males and 197 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at -37 for males and -10 for females, using the current method.
- For 2026, by 30 January, 50.2% of deaths were males and 49.8% were females. Over two-thirds (69.9%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
- In 2026, by 30 January, there have been 2,019 deaths registered. 932 (46.2%) of these took place in hospital, 366 (18.1%) in care homes and 721 (35.7%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
- The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 5 2026 totalled 79, bringing the total for 2026 so far to 433.
Date of death
- The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 30 January (including those registered up to and including 4 February 2026) was 316.
