Weekly registered deaths: 291 for week ending 21 August 2026

The tables containing data on deaths registered for the weeks up to week ending 21 August 2026 were released at 9.30am today.

Key points 

Date of registration

• The provisional number of total deaths registered in Northern Ireland in the week ending 21 August (week 34) was 291, 20 fewer than the previous week (311). 
• The number of expected deaths for week 34 was estimated at 327, using the methodology based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for week 34 was estimated at -36. 
• For the week ending 21 August 2026, the provisional number of deaths was 143 for males and 148 for females.
• The number of expected deaths was estimated at 166 for males and 160 for females, using the current methodology, based on mortality rates and trends. The relative number of excess deaths based on the expected deaths for the same week, was estimated at -23 for males and -12 for females, using the current method.
• For 2026, by 21 August, 50.4% of deaths were males and 49.6% were females. Over two-thirds (66.9%) of deaths were in the 75 years and over age group.
• In 2026, by 21 August, there have been 11,547 deaths registered. 5,244 (45.4%) of these took place in hospital, 2,051 (17.8%) in care homes and 4,252 (36.8%) at residential addresses, hospices, or other locations.
• The number of deaths mentioning flu and/or pneumonia on the death certificate registered in week 34 2026 totalled 34, bringing the total for 2026 so far to 1,999.

• The provisional number of deaths occurring in the week ending 21 August (including those registered up to and including 26 August 2026) was 216.

The number of deaths registered in Week 23 has been updated due to a double registration. Care should therefore be taken in interpreting and comparing with Week 23 data. Care should also be taken in comparing to any previously downloaded weekly data for 2026.
