Over 2 million people registered with a GP in Northern Ireland

New accredited official statistics published today by NISRA statisticians in the Business Services Organisation (BSO) present information on patients, general practitioners and GP practices in Northern Ireland for Quarter 3 of the 2025/26 financial year.
Key findings
- There were 2,075,632 patients registered with a GP practice in Northern Ireland in Q3 2025/26, an increase of 0.2% compared to last quarter.
- The GP headcount rose to 1,483, up 0.4% on the previous quarter and 2.3% higher than a year ago.
- There were 305 GP practices operating in Northern Ireland this quarter, unchanged from the previous quarter.
- Patient registrations totalled 21,373 this quarter, comprising both new registrations and transfers between Northern Ireland GP practices, a decrease of 7.3% since last quarter and 14.9% lower than the same quarter last year.
