Over 2 million patients registered with general practitioners

New accredited official statistics published today by NISRA statisticians in the Business Services Organisation present information on General Medical Services in Northern Ireland in quarter one 2026/27.

Key findings

In quarter one 2026/27:

• There were 2,080,799 registered patients, an increase of 0.6% compared with quarter one 2025/26.
• The total general practitioner headcount was 1,494, an increase of 1.8% compared with quarter one 2025/26.
• There were 304 general practitioner practices, a decrease of 0.3% compared with quarter one 2025/26.
• There were 20,192 new patient registrations and transfers, a decrease of 1.9% compared with quarter one 2025/26.
