Date published: 19 February 2026

Topics: Transport, environment and climate change

New official statistics published today by NISRA statisticians in the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) present information on public transport and journey planning in Northern Ireland for 2024/25.

Key findings

  • In 2024/25, 71% of respondents were satisfied with public transport facilities in their area, down from 76% in 2023/24, but similar to 2017/18 (72%).
  • Just over one-fifth (21%) of respondents used public transport either daily or weekly, with just under two-thirds (64%) indicating that they used public transport at least once a year. Around 31% said they never use public transport.
  • The most commonly used service was NI Rail (53% of public transport users), followed by Ulsterbus (44%), Metro (32%), and Glider (15%). In Belfast Local Government District, Metro usage was notably higher at 87%, and Glider at 36%.
  • The majority (95%) of respondents felt ‘very safe’ or ‘fairly safe’ when using public transport.

About this publication

Each year, DfI commissions questions in the Northern Ireland Continuous Household Survey (CHS) to ascertain public attitudes to relevant topics in relation to active and sustainable travel.

The 2024/25 findings are reported in this publication. Statistics are presented on people’s attitudes and views toward public transport and journey planning.
