More than 16,000 persons supported through long-term health condition programmes

New official statistics published today by statisticians in the Department of Health present data on Patient Education and Self Management Programmes for people with long term conditions in Northern Ireland for the 2024/25 financial year.
The statistics show that 16,251 people participated in patient education and self management programmes across Northern Ireland during the year, continuing a trend of significant growth in programme participation since the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Key findings
- In 2024/25, 16,251 participants attended a patient education or self management programme across Northern Ireland, an increase of 26% (3,387 participants) compared to the previous year (12,864).
- A total of 78 different programmes were in place across Northern Ireland in 2024/25. These ran 1,503 times in total, a slight decrease from 1,602 in 2023/24.
- Stroke programmes were the most attended, with 4,211 participants (26% of all participants), followed by cardiac programmes (2,268 participants, 14%).
- Cardiac programmes were the most frequently run programme type, accounting for 450 runs, nearly one third (30%) of all programmes delivered.
- Of the total, 81% education programmes were delivered by HSC Trusts and 19% were delivered by independent providers.
