Dentist headcount in Northern Ireland falls for second consecutive quarter to 1,180

New accredited official statistics published today by NISRA statisticians in the Business Services Organisation (BSO) present information on dental services for Northern Ireland.

Key findings

During quarter four 2025/26:

  • There were 1,180 dentists, a decrease of 0.7% since last quarter and 2.2% since last year.
  • There were 945,261 patient registrations, a decrease of 0.8% since last quarter and 9.1% since last year.
  • There were 351 dental practices, a decrease of 0.8% since last quarter and 2.2% since last year.
  • There were 124,261 fillings and 27,040 extractions, decreases of 11.0% and 14.5% respectively since last quarter.
  • There were 133,811 X-rays, a decrease of 8.3% since last quarter and 2.0% since last year.
  • There were 2,895 crowns, a decrease of 13.8% since last quarter and 8.1% since last year.
