Health and Care overview

There are five Health and Social Care Trusts in Northern Ireland, with 57,500 staff members in 2008, 34% of which were working for Belfast HSC Trust.

In 2008/09 there were around half a million inpatient and day case admissions to hospital, 1.5 million outpatient attendances and 750,000 emergency attendances at Accident & Emergency Departments.

In 2008 there were 1,148 GPs with 1,850,000 registered patients, 62 GPs per 100,000 patients, and 819 dentists with 860,000 registered patients.

The lowest death rate in history of Northern Ireland was recorded in 2009 with 14,400 deaths, 8.1 deaths per 1,000 population, with a median age at death of 71.6 for males and 78.2 for females.
