25/07/2002 The Combined Election: An analysis of the combined Parliamentary and District Council elections in Northern Ireland on 7th June 2001
The report presents the findings from research on the Local Council and Westminster elections, which were held on the 7 June 2001. This was the first time that a synchronised poll had been held in Northern Ireland. The poll was conducted using two different voting systems: the “first past the post” system for the Westminster elections and the proportional representation Single Transferable Vote (STV) system for the District Council Elections. The focus of the research was to elicit the views and experience of the 7 June poll from the perspective of voters, presiding officers and count staff. The research aimed to assess how election staff and voters coped with the combined poll and considered the nature of potential malpractice. |
