The Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) is one of the region's largest employers, with approximately 27,000 staff (January 2010) spread across the various Government Departments. The NICS has a crucial role to play, both in policy work in support of Ministers and collective decision making, and in the delivery of a wide range of public services.
Most NICS personnel work in the general administrative grades; the remainder belong to a great variety of occupations.
As well as overall staff numbers, statistics are produced on many aspects of human resources, e.g. equality of opportunity.
There are currently five annual publications and one quarterly publication:
1. Equality Statistics for the Northern Ireland Civil Service - detailed statistics
on the NICS workforce (including recruitment and leavers) by gender, grade, community background, age-group, ethnicity and disability.
2. Personnel Statistics - an overview of the human resource
profile of the Northern Ireland Government Departments.
3. Sickness Absence in the Northern Ireland Civil Service - a
detailed report covering duration of absence, reasons for absence, analyses of trends over the last five years and an evaluation
of the progress that has been made towards absence targets.
4. Analysis of NICS Recruitment Competitions - a
summary of applications and appointments by gender, community background, age group, ethnicity and disability.
5. Pay Statistics for the Northern Ireland Civil Service - a summary of salaries of staff, by grade level. Covers most recent year and the previous five years.
6. Employment in the Northern Ireland Civil Service (Quarterly) - a snapshot of the number of staff in the Service (headcount and full-time equivalent) with accompanying trend data.
