In 2008 the Annual Business Inquiry estimated turnover from businesses
to be worth £57,875 million (excluding VAT), an increase of 7.6% compared to the previous year.
Gross Value Added (a measure of the value of economic activity generated by businesses)
was estimated at £17,544 million, up 5.0% over the year.
In addition, manufacturing exports from NI increased by 7.1% (£385 million)
over the year to £5.8 billion. Total sales to the Republic of Ireland (ROI) in 2008/09 were £1.7 billion,
up £4 million (0.3%) over the year (2007/08 – 2008/09).
