The Northern Ireland Transport SystemOverviewThe Road Safety Monitor 2009 found that 33% of respondents think it is acceptable to drive after one drink and that the majority of respondents (95%) did not agree that drivers should be allowed to use a hand held mobile phone while driving. The Northern Ireland Seat Belt Survey 2010 found that the overall seat belt wearing rate for all car occupants observed was 97%. Since 1994 driver wearing rates have increased from 88% to 98% Results from the Travel Survey for Northern Ireland indicated that Northern Ireland residents made, on average, 914 journeys per person per year over the period 2007-2009, 70% of these journeys were by car and 18% walking. At the end of 2008, there were just over 1 million vehicles licensed in Northern Ireland, 82% of which were cars.During 2008-09, there were 44.0 million passenger journeys made on Ulsterbus, 26.5 million on Metro and 10.2 million on Northern Ireland Railways. Belfast International Airport was the 12th busiest commercial airport in the UK in 2008 and accounted for 2% of all UK terminal passengers.
