Population Estimates - Persons aged 85 and over

The ageing of the population has led to increased demand for more detailed population estimates of older people. NISRA have used an internationally recognised methodology to produce detailed estimates of the numbers of people aged 85 and over by sex and age.
The most recent population estimates for persons aged 85 and over relate to mid-2012 and were published on 27 September 2013. Estimates for the period mid-2001 to mid-2011 have been rebased (as with the recently updated mid-year estimates) to take into account the 2011 Census (more information available here).

Please note: The survivorship rate methodology used in these estimates mean that there are minor differences for the period 2001 to 2012 compared to previous years' estimates. Differences may also in part be due to rebasing the population estimates.
